The Sr. Accountant, Finance & Accountability is responsible for a variety of duties, including monthly reporting, cash flow, budget preparation and audit preparation.



Reporting to the Controller, the Sr. Accountant works closely with the Finance & Accountability Team and unit managers at RHF.


This position also works with auditors, bank and investment advisors, contractors and suppliers.



As an integral member of the RHF team and as expected of all staff, this position actively participates with:

Supports the Controller with preparation of:

  • annual budget, forecast and projections liaising with unit managers, updating guidelines and templates and entering into the financial system;
  • financial information for government proposals, annual reports and other external communications;
  • annual T3010 charities information return; and
  • statutory filings and compliance with Corporations Canada and CRA (Includes preparation of GST quarterly rebate return).


Supports the Controller with:

  • compliance with federal and provincial legislation;
  • Corporations Canada, CRA, Canadian GAAP and Imagine Canada requirements;
  • annual audit process; preparing supporting documents;
  • evaluation of financial systems, integration with related systems such as Salesforce, Ceridian, Jet Reports, grant management systems, and access security;
  • managing general ledger to ensure data is up-to-date, complete and accurate;
  • the treasury function including cash management and forecasting;
  • maintenance of historical financial information;
  • preparation of quarterly reports for presentation to the Audit and Finance committee and Board;
  • reporting to government funders and compliance with the terms of funding agreements;
  • maintenance, upgrades and improvements of Navision financial system and Jet Reports; and
  • ensuring funds are accounted for and disbursed according to designated intent;


Responsible for:

  • preparing management reports,
  • identifying process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce costs;
  • working closely with the Controller to:
  • develop, standardize and automate reporting and to recommend; and
  • develop, implement and administer effective policies and procedures.
  • conducting bank and investment reconciliations, cash transfers, petty cash and preparing investment reports;
  • handling month and year-end closing procedures including preparation of cash on hand, use of funds and revenue recognition reports, and review of journal entries and quarter end reconciliations;
  • providing oversight and back-up to AP and AR;
  • capital assets and prepaid expenses;
  • keeping abreast of current developments in Canadian GAAP and CRA legislation, and assisting with interpreting developments and the impact on RHF;
  • financial record keeping in line with document management policies; and
  • assisting the Controller with:
    • working collaboratively with fundraising units to reconcile fundraising revenue and ensure compliance. Includes assisting with entering donations on an ad hoc basis; and
    • UBC Endowment analysis and reporting.
  • participating with special projects, as required.


Performs other related duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the position.


Education: University degree in Finance or a related discipline.

Certification/Designations: CPA designation.



  • Minimum 5 years of experience in positions of increasing responsibility within accounting and finance;
  • Experience in a not-for-profit environment and/or with fund accounting preferred;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of budget, forecast and analysis techniques;
  • Strong understanding of Corporations Canada requirements and CRA policies and guidance;
  • Strong understanding of accounting practices and applications in accordance with best practices;
  • Computer experience required including advanced experience with spreadsheets, accounting systems, databases and word processing; and
  • Experience with MS Dynamics Navision, Jet Reports and/ or Salesforce an asset.



  • Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, organizational, presentation and project management skills;
  • Superior attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as work under pressure in a team environment to manage priorities and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships including interacting positively with all levels of staff, auditors, other agencies and representatives;
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion and confidentiality;
  • Ability to identify and solve problems, understand and apply broader concepts while mastering the detail; and
  • Ability to take initiative to research, recommend and implement improvements for business processes.
